Girl Guides of Canada is planning to close 16 camps, according to the article, “16 Ont. Girl Guide camps slated for closure” on the CBC News website. The article states that most of the camps have been struggling financially for years.
“Cutting off camps is one of the worst things that can drive away interest in Girl Guides,” former Girl Guide Beth Hubbert said in the article.
When I read the article I suspected that Girl Guides of Canada may make it hard for people to donate online, so I went to their website. I searched for 10 minutes and could not figure out how to donate. I finally searched “how to make a donation to girl guides of Canada” on Google and found their donation page.
I’m not saying that making ways to donate online more visible would save the camps, but a large “Donate Now” button certainly could not hurt and the lack of one may be a red flag about the group’s internal fundraising challenges.
LandChoices’ Big Camps program offers ways for Girl Guides of Canada and other groups to raise funds and preserve camps.
